Every year on April 11, World Parkinson's Disease Awareness Day is celebrated. The date was instituted in honor of the surgeon and pharmacist James Parkinson, who made the first report of the disease more than 200 years ago.

Marked by the progressive degeneration of neurons that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine, closely related to the domain of body movements, the disease, still without a known cause, affects movements and coordination. As the patient's clinical condition progresses, he/she is unable to perform daily activities, however essential, such as eating, bathing or dressing alone.

Characteristics

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease affects 1% of the world population aged over 65 years. In Brazil, it is estimated that about 200 thousand people suffer from the problem. Present in patients aged over 55 years, its prevalence increases between 70 and 75 years.

Neurologist Fernando Rezende explains how to diagnose the disease. “The process of destruction of nerve cells occurs in various parts of the brain with symptoms such as muscle stiffness and unintentional tremors. The disease can be detected with the clinical examination of the neurologist. Brain positron emission tomography (PET) scan can help with identification”.

The doctor points out that disease prevention is associated with the practice of physical activities and a balanced diet. According to a study published in Movement Disorders, of the International Society for Disorders and Parkinson's and Movement, the Mediterranean diet can reduce chances of the disease.
